Welcome, The Gibsons Dogrunner

The Gibsons Dogrunner

We are excited for the Sunshine Coast and want to give a warm welcome to The Gibsons Dogrunner to the AnimalKind community of evidence-based humane dog trainers!

Krisztina Harasztosi, owner and trainer at The Gibsons Dogrunner, has been surrounded by animals all her life, so it makes sense that she continued that bond when she moved to Canada some years back. Here is Krisztina’s story, shared with her own voice. She writes:

“After moving to Canada, I had the privilege of volunteering and later working at the Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. During this time, I also established a dog walking business specializing in private walks for dogs with special needs, including puppies, senior dogs, dogs with health issues, and reactive dogs.

Recognizing the importance of science-based knowledge to effectively serve my community, I pursued several certifications and diplomas, culminating in two board certifications from the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC).

Animals have been a significant part of my life since childhood, and I have cared for a diverse range of pets, including dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits, and chinchillas. Communicating with and understanding animals comes naturally to me, and I cannot imagine causing them harm. Although I was exposed to aversive methods in Hungary, I have always believed in the sentience of animals and the effectiveness of positive reinforcement. This belief is supported by scientific evidence, which shows that punishment-based training is unnecessary and cruel and can lead to increased anxiety and fear in animals.

I have always believed in the sentience of animals and the effectiveness of positive reinforcement. This belief is supported by scientific evidence, which shows that punishment-based training is unnecessary and cruel and can lead to increased anxiety and fear in animals.

During the first year of the pandemic, I transitioned from dog walking to full-time training and behaviour consultation, focusing on helping dogs most in need—those who are fearful, reactive, or aggressive. I am committed to aversive-free, science-based training techniques and enjoy working with dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds, including many rescue dogs.

I offer private training sessions, allowing me to tailor behaviour modification plans to the unique needs of each dog and owner, fostering strong, harmonious relationships. In more complex cases, I collaborate with local veterinarians, a testament to the strong professional relationships I have developed within the community. Additionally, I maintain good communication with other trainers and dog professionals, believing it is crucial for those who share a commitment to humane animal training to connect and work together.

Dedicated to promoting positive, humane dog training, I actively seek certifications from reputable organizations. My recent accreditation with the BC SPCA’s AnimalKind program aligns perfectly with my commitment to aversive-free training and humane practices. By partnering with the BC SPCA, I aim to raise awareness about the benefits of aversive-free training and help guardians make informed, compassionate choices for their pets. Together, we can improve the lives of dogs and their owners through education and excellence in training.”
